Single Teacher Schools
Single Teacher Schools is a programme of the Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society, whose aims are to improve the education and health care status of the children of remote and backward villages in Tamil Nadu. They recruit and train teachers to take classes between 5.30 and 8.30 P.M every day for the target group of students in the age group of 3 to 15. Students are taught a well-structured syllabi on par with main stream education. The stress is not only on formal education but also on values such as integrity, compassion, patriotism and knowledge of heritage and culture. The organization also has an army of well-trained health workers who teach the children and their parents thje basics of hygiene and health care.
All students and Faculty members of the College visit Single Teacher Schools once a year. There are 60 villages with Single Teacher Schools earmarked for the College in the districts of Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Vellore, on the outskirts of Chennai. These annual visits provide the College students a peek into rural life the school children and kindle in them the spirit of service and sharing. They interact with the children, teach them songs, conduct games, present them with useful gifts like tiffin boxes and stationary, and motivate them to take education seriously and work hard to better their standard of living.
To the children of these Single Teacher School this annual interaction with the Meenakshi College students leaves a lasting impression in their young and aspiring minds.
