     The Department of Mathematics was a part of the college right from the college's inception in 1975. The Department started functioning with  the P.U.C. Course with a strength of 96 students.
    In the year 1976-77 the B.Sc . Mathematics course was started with a strength of 75 students. The department was upgraded to a Post-graduate department in 1981 and was elevated to the research level in 1988 with the introduction of the M.Phil. course comprising 4 full time students. So far, about 60 dissertations have been submitted under the able guidance of the faculty. Many of the dissertations were highly commended.
    As an event of the World Math Year 2000, an International Conference on ‘Analysis and its Applications’, was organized in collaboration with Forum d’ Analystes, Chennai from December 6-9, 2000. About 120 delegates from all over the world participated and more than 60 papers were presented. 
    A two-day national level seminar in Advanced Techniques and Applied Mathematics was organized in September 2005. Several one-day seminars are organized periodically.
    Among the extra-curricular activities a project on Rain Water Harvesting and Yogakshemam (health club) deserve special mention.
