Introduction

The Department of History of Meenakshi Collegefor Women was started in the year 1976 and since then has shown a steady growth in all aspects of its life. In the year 1976, the Pre University course was started, with History, Economics and Advanced English followed by B.A. History in 1977-78, M.A. History in 1983-84, and M.Phil. in 1988-89. The department at present consists of nine members all with research qualification and eligibility to guide candidates for M.Phil. Research Degree. All the staff members of the department had qualified them selves for M.Phil. or Ph.D. Degrees in service. Some of the significant achievements of the department are:

  •       Design of Innovative courses when college became autonomous
  •       Introduction of useful job oriented certificate courses
  •       Successful completion of Doctoral Degree by eight out of nine teachers in the department and research publications.(publications of Staff -10, M.Phil. research dissertations-70, M.A. Projects-79, B.A. Projects - 18 ) and a  minor UGC funded project is completed by Dr. Ashalatha Augustine
  •       A summer course (UGC sponsored) was organized in 1988-89 and number of seminars/Exhibitions/ Study tours/ field trips were organized  in relevant areas.
  •       The alumni of history department are employed as lecturers in Universities colleges, and also in Travel Agencies and a few of them are practicing law

The department has been striving to

  •       Stimulate social awareness in students  through suitable exposure and inculcate a sense of responsibility and commitment
  •       Enhance the employability of graduate and postgraduate students by providing them with knowledge and skills, relevant to requirements
