Introduction
In 1986,
MeenakshiCollegeearned the distinction of being the first college under the
University of Madras
to offer the highly prestigious
Master of Computer Applications course. And with this milestone
was born the Department of Computer Science.
In 1988,
the evening college MCA course was also introduced, bringing the total strength
of MCA students to 30.
On 12
June, 1987, the college's fully equipped
Computer
Center
was formally inaugurated by the then Vice-Presidence of
India
, His Excellency, Sri R. Venkataraman.
The
very next year saw the birth of Computer Center II in the same wing of the college
building, a few rooms from the first lab. This lab was then inaugurated by His Excellency
Sri R.Venkatraman, this time as the President of India, on
31 August, 1988.
All the
computing resources of the college were revamped and brought under one roof in 2003.
Thus was born the
Abhinava
Vidyatheertha Computer Center, inaugurated on
5 February that
year by Dr. R. Chidambaram, the then
Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, in the presence of
Dr. E. Balaguruswamy,
the then H’ble Vice-Chancellor, Anna University.
The
Abhinava Vidyatheertha Computer Center
is a unique blend of state-of-the-art computing facilities, aesthetics and the right
learning ambience. Throbbing with life through the day, this learning hub is complete
with computer labs, library, seminar area with multimedia facilities and centralized
air-conditioning, and is undoubtedly the cynosure of all eyes and the pride of
Meenakshi College
College For Women
.
In 2004,
the M.Sc (Information Technology)
course was introduced with a sanctioned strength of 26 under the Autonomous stream.
The overall
objectives of the Department are encapsulated in the objectives of the courses it
offers:

To provide a strong foundation in computers, with a clear technology focus.

To help the students gain expertise in current information technology areas, primarily
web and communication technologies, without compromising on core fundamentals

To enable all-round development of the student, her personality and attitudes.
